Introduction Cholesterol is a lipid found in the cell membranes of all tissues, and is transported in the blood plasma of all animals. It is also considered a sterol (a combination steroid and alcohol) and is more abundant in tissues which either synthesize more of it or have more abundant densely-packed membranes, for example, the liver, spinal cord and brain and is insoluble in blood, but is transported in the circulatory system bound to one of the varieties of lipoproteins. Cholesterol is required in the membranes of mammalian cells for normal cell function, and is either synthesized or derived from the diet, in which case it is delivered by the bloodstream in low-density lipoproteins. Cholesterol is minimally soluble in water; it cannot dissolve and travel in the water-based bloodstream. It is primarily found in animal fats: all food containing animal fats contains cholesterol; food not containing animal fats either contains none or negligible amounts. It s a waxy, fat-like substance that can build up on the walls of your arteries (blood vessels that carry blood from the heart to other parts of the body) and plays essential roles in the formation of cell membranes, some hormones, and vitamin D. Disease Large numbers of low density particles (LDL) are strongly associated with the presence of arterial disease within the arteries. Recent research by Harvard investigators has shown that moderate egg consumption–up to one a day–DOES NOT increase heart disease risk in healthy individuals. People with diabetes, though, should probably limit themselves to no more than two or three eggs a week, as the Nurse s Health Study found that for such individuals, an egg a day might increase the risk for heart disease. Levels According to the lipid hypothesis, abnormally high cholesterol levels (AKA hypercholesterolemia) and abnormal proportions of LDL and HDL are associated with cardiovascular disease by promoting atheroma development in arteries (atherosclerosis). Since high LDL contributes to this process, it is termed “bad cholesterol”, while high levels of HDL (”good cholesterol”) offer a degree of protection against heart disease. Abnormally low levels are termed hypocholesterolemia. As has been said, high levels of cholesterol in the blood can increase your risk of heart disease and your levels tend to rise as you get older. In the 1960s and 70s, scientists established a link between high blood levels and heart disease. Some types of fat are clearly good for cholesterol levels and others are clearly bad for them. While it is well known that high blood levels are associated with an increased risk for heart disease, scientific studies have shown that there is only a weak relationship between the amount of cholesterol a person “consumes” and their blood cholesterol levels or risk for heart disease. For some people with high levels, reducing the amount in the diet has a small but helpful impact on blood cholesterol levels. While it s true that egg yolks have a lot of cholesterol–and, therefore may slightly affect blood levels–eggs also contain nutrients that may help lower the risk for heart disease, including protein, vitamins B12 and D, riboflavin, and folate. Saturated fats raise total blood levels more than dietary cholesterol because they tend to boost both good HDL and bad LDL. Trans fats are even worse than saturated fats because they raise bad LDL and lower good HDL. In studies in which poly-unsaturated and mono-unsaturated fats were eaten in place of carbohydrates, these good fats decreased LDL levels and increased HDL levels. Logically, most of the influence that fat intake has on heart disease is due to its effect on blood cholesterol levels. In other words, low-fat diets appear to offer no apparent advantages over diets with fat levels close to the national average. Fiber Diets More Effective in Colon Cancer Protection in Men Than in Women

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published in its February 2006 a report containing conclusions of a research team at University of Arizona, related to links between high fiber diets and colorectal adenoma recurrence. According to team findings, men who prefer a diet rich in fiber have a significantly reduced risk of colorectal adenoma recurrence. The study conclusions suggests that sex differences in response to fiber diets, as no such effect has been seen in women. The research team notes that many evidences in specific literature show that fiber may influence the colon differently, depending on sex. Although the process by which these differential response happen remains unclear, future researches should include complicated sex analyses as well as further study of the influence of fiber diets on specific colon locations. To assess the effect of dietary action as a whole and by sex in the pooled group of 3209 subjects a model of logistic regression were used by researchers. No major effect on adenoma recurrence was concluded in the targeted population. However, among men, fiber was linked with a significant reduced risk of recurrence. Among women wasn t observed any significant association. While the causes for these different reactions regarding sexes are still unknown, the study advanced the supposition that the differences between the sexes regarding colonic location of tumors and polyps could be the answer. Patients with concomitant illness: Though not much data is available on this, the medical fraternity is usually cautious in prescribing Lexapro to patients with severe renal impairment. Pregnancy: Babies, born to mothers using Lexapro, are susceptible a condition called persistent pulmonary hypertension (pphn) whose symptoms include: abnormal blood flow and insufficient oxygen level in body. Use of Lexapro during pregnancy has also resulted in birth defects, including heart problems, in some babies. However, the physician might have reason to administer a small dosage (10mg a day) of Lexapro if the mother s medical condition warrants treatment for the sake of normal foetal growth. Bird flu is a disease caused by a specific type of avian (bird) influenza virus, the so-called H5N1 virus. This virus was first discovered in birds in China in 1997 and since then has infected 125 people in Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and Indonesia, killing 64 of them. It is spread by infected migratory birds (including wild ducks and geese) to domestic poultry (primarily chickens, ducks, and turkeys), and then to humans. Since 1997, and especially since the beginning of 2004, approximately 150 million birds have either died from the disease or been killed to prevent further spread. Nevertheless, this very infectious and deadly virus has spread relentlessly to China, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Laos, Russia, Indonesia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Turkey, Romania, England, Croatia, Macedonia, and other countries. This ongoing geographic extension of the virus is of great concern around the world. Because we have already had three pandemics in less than 100 years, we are “overdue” for another one. In addition, just recently and after 10 years of work, researchers determined that the H5N1 bird-flu virus is genetically more similar to the deadly 1918-19 influenza pandemic virus than to the viruses which caused the much less severe pandemics of 1957-58 and 1968-69. To summarize the important points so far: The bird-flu virus is a very deadly strain of avian influenza called H5N1 that has killed millions of birds; 2) the virus is spreading relentlessly around the world; 3) the virus has infected many species, which is uncharacteristic of most viruses; 4) the virus has been shown to be similar to the most deadly virus ever known, which caused the 1918-19 pandemic; 5) the virus has been shown to be much more deadly in laboratory experiments than regular influenza viruses; and 6) the virus is known to have infected at least 125 humans and killed 64 of them so far, yielding a fatality rate of approximately 50 percent. The virus continues to kill humans, but at a slow rate—it has not yet acquired the capacity to be easily transmissible between humans; humans become infected primarily from sick birds. Because humans alive today have no natural immunity to the H5N1 virus, once it becomes easily transmissible between humans a pandemic or global epidemic will occur. The central question is, when will it exchange enough genetic material with the usual seasonal human influenza-viruses to become more like a human-influenza virus—and thus become easily transmissible between people? Many people believe that the virus will continue to spread around the world until it is present in most or all countries—before it will “go human” (become easily transmissible between people). And that may be the case. The pandemic of 1918-19 is thought to have started in Kansas (of all places). So it is certainly possible that the coming pandemic could start somewhere else than in Asia—although most experts believe it will, in fact, start there. It could start in a country which has not yet been host to the virus. However, it is most certainly not necessary for the virus to march all the way around the world before a pandemic can begin. The fact that the virus already has spread to more than 15 countries, and to many different bird and animal species, provides the opportunity for it to commingle with a human-influenza virus and create the dreaded human contagion. There is no known reason why this could not happen tomorrow. While it is true that the probability of the switch increases with time, the probability of its happening tomorrow is far from zero. The flip side to the possibility that the crossover could happen at any time is the fact that the virus has been around at least since 1997 and, as a matter of record, has not yet switched to a deadly human-to-human form. At least a few scientists believe that the virus can’t and won’t make the switch to a deadly form, possibly ever. And so we are left with these two very different possibilities—at any time, and as soon as tomorrow, the virus could mutate into a deadly form, readily transmissible between people—or it might never transform itself into such a form. There appears to be much more evidence for the former and, presumably, that is why the vast majority of scientists and governments are scrambling to prepare for the worst. This situation is analogous to living on the Gulf Coast during the beginning of hurricane season. Residents there have been through it before, but most of the time the storms are not too severe and the people can get by without too much hassle. However, there have been rare severe storms that have been devastating. Some day another hurricane is coming, and it appears that it might well be a Category IV or even V by the time it strikes land. However, that’s not certain—no one can say for sure, and no one knows exactly when it will strike land. So what should the residents do? What should the residents have done before hurricane Katrina? The coming bird-flu pandemic might be mild and it might not come for years. On the other hand, it might be severe and it might start tomorrow. The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) has said, “While the severity of the next pandemic cannot be predicted, modeling studies suggest that its effect in the United States could be severe.” We should also be mindful that the pandemic could come at any time, even before the virus methodically marches around the globe. No matter how advanced science has become, we still can not predict when the switch will occur; it is currently unknowable—and that does not mean it will come later, in a predictable fashion. We live in an addiction-prone society, but of all the addictions out there, one of the most deadly is one that is most often overlooked: junk food. The term “junk food” refers to any food that is high in calories, fat, salt, and sugar without bringing any nutritional value to the table. Unfortunately, this food is usually convenient, tasty, and extremely addictive. Foods that are high in fat and sugar work on our brains like opiates – painkillers – and the more we eat, the more we want. This consequence is also increased by the “empty calorie” effect of junk food. It fills us up for a short period of time, but then, like any addict, we begin to feel tired, depressed, and hungry all over again, and we keep coming back for more of the same. Junk food becomes a dangerous addiction because its effects are so subtle. When we eat a chocolate bar, a bag of chips, or a meal of fast food, we don’t see our arteries clogging with plaque and fat deposits. We don’t feel ourselves gaining weight as our internal organs become fatty and weak, and most of the time, we don’t associate tiredness, anxiety, depression, or skin problems with the junk food we consumed earlier in the day. Furthermore, because it seems like everybody does it, eating junk food doesn’t appear to be an addiction. Junk food attacks every age group. Children are addicted, seniors are addicted, most people are addicted for their entire lives without ever knowing it, and without understanding the huge health-related repercussions that come along with the treats and snacks that seem so harmless. We begin our addiction to junk food at a young age. Children who become addicted to junk food actually stop eating the nutritious food they need to grow up healthy. And the current epidemic of childhood obesity is only the tip of the iceberg. Kids that live on fats and sugars have shorter attention spans, growth problems, and suffer from tooth decay and weak bone structure early in life. By the time we reach young adulthood, we are probably getting a majority of our daily caloric intake from junk food. Deep-fried potatoes have been shown to be highly carcinogenic. Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) causes not just obesity but several forms of neurotoxicity. And the list goes on. Even if we’re not getting fat off junk food, we are getting sick. At this point, we have grown into full-fledged, adult junk food addicts. If we have somehow managed to avoid the worst consequences of our addiction during our teen years, they will now come out in force. Those who eat junk food on a regular basis are at risk of contracting Type 2 Diabetes, heart disease, liver disease, hypertension, and a myriad of other illnesses that lead to heart attacks, strokes, organ failure, and death. In fact, almost twice as many people die each year of heart disease caused by diet-related obesity and cardiovascular problems, than die of cancer. Like any lifelong smoker or alcoholic, the ravages of junk food addiction become increasingly apparent on and within our bodies as we age. While it is possible to break the addiction, the best solution is to avoid it to begin with. It is for this reason that junk food is getting kicked out of school cafeterias and vending machines all over the world. Ultimately, junk food is not only robbing us of the things we need to be healthy, it is actively poisoning our systems. In the mid-1990 s I served as the Chief Executive Officer of Pentagon City Hospital which as the name suggests is adjacent to the Pentagon located in Arlington, Virginia. This is just on the opposite side of the Potomac River from Washington, DC. Although I served well after the event it was never far from my mind that my hospital was the receiving hospital for the fortunate survivors of an airline accident. On January 13, 1982, Air Florida Flight 90 crashed into Washington, DC s 14th Street Bridge and fell into the Potomac River shortly after taking off. A total of 70 passengers and 4 crew died and four motorists on the bridge. Air Crashes really make an impression on all of us and we remember them with vivid detail. It may be the randomness, the unfairness, the sudden calamity or maybe the process of group death in a common event. For whatever the reason, it sticks with us. Even as a practiced air passenger I regurgitate these feelings each time I fly; more so if my travel is infrequent and the opposite if frequent. I know I am not alone in contemplating how such a grisly death could play out. We play the odds however and usually go on with our travel plans. We play the odds every day in just about any activity we choose to engage. In the case of commercial air travel even the slowest of us can pretty much understand the odds of success and we know that big sweeping changes usually occur after such tragic events. With Air Florida s crash it was about anti-ice systems; other air crashes brought on expected major changes based on lessons learned from these tragedies. When we learn more about the air traffic system and specific airlines operations we can modify the odds as we go along. If you have just bought the cheapest ticket available on an already oversold flight the odds of you getting bumped at the gate just went up, but you choose to play these odds. I once boarded a flight departing late at night from Dulles International Airport and all was going well until we determined one member of the flight crew couldn t get out of the back galley restroom as a result of food poisoning and the flight was canceled. This was a bad result that I certainly had not counted on. We know and expect big change after these events, how do we go about accounting for the day to day changes? If I figure out the guy I just watched knock back several vodka laced watermelon shooters at the terminal restaurant bar ends up as my pilot, I figure my odds of having a bad flight were drastically modified and I would need to make a decision based on this new information. In this case, a personal decision is required based on new insight to how the odds might change; this might be a life or death decision for me. We can understand the impact on our imagination and the actions taken as a result of the Air Florida crash killing 74 human beings. Can you begin to imagine the public furor if we were to have 18 Air Florida crashes each and every day? If you heard that 1,332 people died yesterday in an air crash and that we expected another 1,332 people to be killed in an air crash today, would you actually be willing to get on an airplane? And, if we had such an air crash every day, in a year s time we would we would record 6,756 Air Florida crashes killing 500,000 people. We would demand and expect big changes to take place to avoid these deaths. Heart disease, killed more than 700,000 Americans in 2001 and is the mathematical equivalent of over 6,000 Air Florida air crashes, accounted for 29% of all deaths in the United States. In 2001, the rate of death from heart disease was 31% higher among blacks than whites and 49% higher among men than women. In 2001, heart disease cost the nation $193.8 billion. About 66% of heart attack patients do not make a complete recovery which places an even greater burden on families, budgets and human misery. The usual first sign of heart disease is death. Heart disease is the nation s leading cause of death. Much of the burden of heart disease could be eliminated by reducing the prevalence rates of its major risk factors: high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, tobacco use, diabetes, physical inactivity, and poor nutrition. Modest reductions in the rates of one or more of these risk factors can have a large public health impact. We are committing “Epigenomic Suicide”. Where is our outrage? Where is our self control? One of the best meditation techniques for opening and balancing the chakras, is the visualization meditation technique. In this technique, the color attribute of each chakra is exploited and used an instrument to stimulate and awaken that particular center. Let s begin first though by giving a brief overview of the chakra system and how they work. Chakras are energy vortexes that reside in the astral body and transmute energy between the 3 bodies that make up a human being. There 3 bodies are the physical body, astral body and mental body. Charka essentially move energy between these bodies, by raising or dropping the frequency of the energy as required. Each chakra resides in a particular location along the spine from the base to the crown of the head, and the health of the center is reflected in the health of the organs and systems in that particular region. In addition, chakras are responsible for personality traits and having these centers in balance, means to have one s physical, emotional and mental bodies in balance as well. So now that we have an understanding of chakras, let s delve into the visualization meditation technique which can be used to open, heal and balance these important centers. Each chakra is associated with a particular color, and by using this information along with the power of concentration and visualization one can help stimulate a particular center and assist it in opening. Below is the color chart that lists the particular color associated with each center. Each of these colors should then be used, as described in the meditation script below it. Chakra Point Color Chart: Root chakra: Red Sex chakra: Orange Navel chakra: Yellow Heart chakra: Green Throat chakra: Blue Third eye chakra: Indigo Crown chakra: Violet To practice chakra visualization meditation technique, one should follow the step-by-step instructions below. 1. Either lie on your back, or sit up in cross legged posture with your back straight. 2. Close your eyes and take 5 deep slow breaths to help relax you and clam the mind. 3. Now begin to visualize the color red at the base of your spine as a glowing ball of red light. Feel your breath moving in and out from this center while continuing to imagine a red ball of light emanating from that location. 4. After spending a minute or two at the root chakra, move up to the sex chakra and repeat the exercise with the color orange. 5. In this fashion work through all the other chakras as well, where the navel chakra is located at the level of the solar plexus, the heart center at the level of the sternum, the throat center at the neck and the third eye chakra in the middle of the forehead. 6. Once you complete the cycle, relax for a few minutes and then finish the meditation, by affirming you are healthy, balanced and at peace. The above chakra meditation, works through the entire chakra system, but if you are interested in opening and balancing just one particular center, you can simply focus on doing the visualization meditation with the color for that specific center only. This method of chakra balancing is very effective, but one should use it judiciously, as one should be physically able to handle the increased energy flow that can occur when chakras are activated and opened.
